Electric Upgrade During Home Automation: What Homeowners Need to Know

23 January 2026 / No Comments

By TGEP Electrical Services — Your Local Smart Home Automation Experts Smart home automation is becoming a must‑have for homeowners across Joliet, Plainfield, Naperville, Bolingbrook, Aurora, and the surrounding Illinois suburbs. From app‑controlled lighting to voice‑activated switches, families want convenience, efficiency, and modern living. But there’s one critical factor many people overlook: Home automation only works as well as the electrical system behind it. A beautifully installed smart switch means nothing if the wiring behind the wall can’t support it. At TGEP Electrical Services, we see this every week — homeowners excited to automate their homes, but their electrical foundation simply isn’t ready.   🏠 Smart Home Automation Is the Visible Layer — The Real Work Is Hidden When people think “smart home,” they picture: Phone‑controlled lighting Alexa/Siri/HomeKit automation Smart dimmers and switches Automated scenes and schedules But these are just the visible parts. The real backbone of a reliable smart home includes: Correct wire sizes Properly installed conduits A modern electrical panel Neutral and ground availability Adequate service capacity Clean, stable power Without these fundamentals, even the best smart home automation system will fail or behave unpredictably.   ⚠️ Why Many Homes in Joliet, Plainfield & Naperville Need Electrical Upgrades First In many newer subdivisions — especially those built with cost‑cutting in mind — electrical systems are installed to minimum code. That means: No neutral wires in switch boxes Undersized wiring Overloaded panels Limited service capacity Missing or improper grounding Homeowners later try to add smart switches or lighting automation and run into problems immediately. At TGEP, we often hear: “Why do I need a neutral or ground? Are you upselling me?” Not at all. The truth is simple: Most smart switches REQUIRE a neutral line. Many REQUIRE a ground. Without them, the switch cannot power its internal electronics or operate safely. This isn’t a preference — it’s a technical requirement.   ⚡ Why a 60‑Amp Service Is NOT Smart‑Home Ready Some older homes in Joliet, Crest Hill, Lockport, and Romeoville still run on 60‑amp service. Trying to install smart home automation on that setup is like trying to run a Tesla on a lawnmower battery. If you’re on a limited budget, the smartest investment is: Upgrade your electrical service BEFORE installing home automation. A service upgrade gives you: Safer, more reliable power Support for smart switches, dimmers, and hubs Capacity for EV chargers, smart panels, and future tech Better resale value Fewer tripped breakers and flickering lights Home automation on a weak electrical system is a waste of money. A proper electrical upgrade sets the stage for everything else.   🔌 TGEP Electrical Services: Your Smart Home Automation Partner Homeowners across Joliet, Plainfield, Naperville, Shorewood, Bolingbrook, Aurora, and nearby areas trust TGEP because we combine: Licensed electrical expertise Smart home automation knowledge Matter / HomeKit / Siri integration Clean, reliable installations Honest guidance based on real technical needs We don’t just install smart switches — we make sure your home is ready for them.

Making Home Automation Simple and Affordable

07 October 2025 / No Comments

The term “Home Automation” often sounds complex and expensive to many consumers. But in reality, it doesn’t have to be. Automating your home doesn’t mean wiring up every room with high-tech gadgets—it can be as simple as streamlining one or two everyday tasks. For example, I have elderly parents, and I often worry about whether they’ve turned off the lights before bed or remembered to shut off the stove. If you’re an iPhone user and want a simple way to check on your loved ones, home automation can help—without breaking the bank. A Simple Solution with Lutron One easy and affordable way to get started is by using a Lutron Caséta hub and smart switch. This setup allows you to automate a single light switch—like the one in a bedroom—so you can monitor and control it remotely. Cost: Around $110 for the hub and switch combo. App: Download the Lutron App from the App Store to your iPhone. Make Sure  Its from Lutron not other company. Installation: If you’re not comfortable with electrical work, call a licensed electrician. If you’re in the Midwest region of Illinois, TGEP is a reliable company that can handle the installation. Setup Steps Connect the Hub: Plug the Lutron hub into your modem’s Ethernet port (or a connected switch). Configure the Hub: Press the black button on the hub when prompted to sync it with your home network. Install the Switch: Once wired, open the Lutron app and tap “Add Device.” Pair the Switch: Press the bottom of the switch until the light flashes. The app will automatically detect and add it to your system. And just like that—voilà!—you’ve created a simple home automation setup that gives you peace of mind and helps your loved ones stay safe.
